Frequently Asked Questions
Most students aim to complete the SAT by the summer before senior year. This leaves time for a retake if desired and allows fall of senior year to focus on college applications rather than testing.
Recommended Timing by Grade
Sophomore
Testing from late sophomore year through junior year works well. Early testing reduces pressure and leaves time for improvement if needed.
Junior
Junior year is the primary SAT year for most students. It is best to complete testing by the summer before senior year.
Senior
Senior year is typically reserved for final retakes. Most colleges do not accept SAT scores after December of senior year.
Practical Test Targets
Ideal completion: August before senior year
Comfortable final retake: October senior year
Latest accepted test date*: December senior year
*Individual colleges may vary.
Grading standards vary across schools, but the SAT provides a standardized benchmark.
It helps colleges evaluate:
academic readiness in math and English
reasoning and problem-solving ability
performance under timed conditions
In short, the SAT helps place students on a level playing field across different schools and academic environments.
The SAT is scored on a scale of 400 to 1600.
Math: 200–800
Reading & Writing: 200–800
These two section scores combine to form the total score.
General score ranges:
1000-1200 → developing college readiness (approximately 50th–75th percentile)
1200-1300 → strong performance (approximately 75th–85th percentile)
1300–1400 → competitive at many universities (approximately 85th–93rd percentile)
1400–1500 → highly competitive (approximately 93rd–98th percentile)
1500+ → top-tier performance (99th percentile+)
SAT scores can help indicate current academic readiness and competitiveness for certain universities and scholarships.
Colleges evaluate scores in the context of their applicant pool, so what is considered “competitive” varies by school.
Strong SAT improvement is typically achieved through consistent preparation over time, regardless of a student’s starting score.

While the SAT is a serious test, our bull logo adds a secret bit of humor to the experience.
It draws from the phrase “ride the bull, feel the flow” (often phrased as "doing the bull dance, feelin' the flow"), a pop-culture expression meaning to embrace a high-pressure situation, find rhythm within the challenge, and perform with confidence.
It often implies staying calm and adapting to intense challenges rather than trying to overpower them.
That mindset—staying calm, finding your rhythm, and being adaptable—is exactly what strong SAT performance requires.
